Tiraspol. „Back to the USSR“

Tiraspol is the capital city of the left bank of the river Dniester. The image of the city reminds of former times under Soviet Union. None of the statues exalting the leader of world proletariat, V.I. Lenin, was destroyed. Oldstyle posters and booklets are still hung here. Many stores continue to look like they did before 1990’s.

On the other hand, Tiraspol is an young and advanced city: a modern sports complex was built here. One can find comercial centres, markets and visitors observe the beauty of the young people walking on the streets.

In Tiraspol one can visit the museum house of N.D. Zelinsky, the one who invented the gas mask based on carbon, the museum of history and ethnography, where you will be reminded about Tiraspol fortress, built in 1793 under the establishment of A. Suvorov. Ufortunatelly, the fortress didn’t reach our time. Only a small church and a cellar to stock the powder reminds of its existance. In Tiraspol there is also a Botanical Garden of an unusual beauty. Not far from the city, in the parish of Chitcani an enormous monastery is situated — Noul Neamt. It is worth visiting the pearl of Moldavian wine industry — the „KVINT“ factory.

Kvint

Kvint is an enterprise with a rich history. The factory was founded in 1897. Only two wine factories in present Moldova may praise such a glorious history — the ones in Calarasi and Tiraspol.

At the factory you may get acquainted with the process of making the diwines „Solnecinii“, „Tiraspol“, „Suvorov“, „Kniazi Vitghenstein“, „Belii Aist“, „Kvint“ etc., take part at degustation, admire the unique collection of the enterprise.

Tighina (Bender)

Only a few years ago, the Bender fortress could be admired only from outside, as inside a military unit was detached. Today, a part of citadel is open for the tourists. The fortress itself represents a part of a memorial complex, with a cemetery incorporated. Recently, the place where the corpses of Russian, French, Romanian and other officers were buried was rearranged. Close to the memorial an arch was build, resembling the one formerly situated on Tighina Street in Chisinau.

Concerning the fortress, the towers were restored, a museum opened in the building of former ammunition warehouse, and in front of the museum there were installed statues of the former commanders of the citadel.

When entering in the fortress, the guides will tell you about the place where the camp of Swed army lead by king Karl XII was installed, why the hetman Mazepa was killed in the village of Varnita, near Tighina, either the lost treasure was found or not, and many other interesting stories connected with the fortress.

Stroiesti

One can refer to the village of Stroiesti, Rabnita district, nothing but admiration. In this place you will find the nature at its most magnificent appearance — bizzar rocks on the bank of Dniester, a defile and a cascade, thick oaken forrest. Too complicated described. Better seen. Stroiesti is also famous for its wine yards arranged in form of cascade and planted by the general Vitgenstein, more than 100 years ago. The chapel on the top of the rock preserved, as well as the summer house at the foot of the wine yard. An old mill from the 19th century was restored and made restaurant.

The village is famous also for being the birthplace of the earl P.A. Rumeantev-Zadunaiskii, a great military commander.

Rascov

The village of Rascov, Camenca district, excites by beauty of surrounding nature. It is situated at the foot of a rock on the bank of Dniester. In Rascov walls of a former great synagogue were found preserved (middle of 18th century). In its neighborhood, you can see a abandoned orthodox church and an inhabited catholic church (built approximately in 1786). The main attraction of Rascov is the church Sf. Treime (1779), and the spring „Izvorul Doamnei“ (Lady’s spring). The legends of its origins are connected with the daughter of Moldovan ruler Vasile Lupu, Ruxanda. They say, the water appeared from Ruxanda’s tears, when crying after her dead husband, Timofei Hmelnitchi. In Rascov, in the building of an old school a museum dedicated to a hero of Second World War, named F.I. Jarcinskii, is opened.
